Virat Kohli dismissal controversy in IPL 2024: Fair delivery OR a No ball? Here the Answer to your question

The 17th edition of Indian Premier League has been already started from 22nd March among ten fabulous teams across India. Numerous records has been registered by each team till date, but if IPL goes without controversy Naaahhh!! It always come up with something new. This year the burning topic was Virat Kohli's dismissal against the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Let's take you to the 36th match of the league which was taken place at the beautiful Eden Garden in Kolkata between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). RCB won the toss and chose to chase.

In the first innings, KKR brilliantly started the game. Instead the fall of 6 wickets, they managed to score 222 runs within the span of 20 overs. Skipper Shreyas Iyer knocked half-century in 36 balls.

With the target to score 223 runs in 120 balls, RCB in full swing to chase. Tough! but not impossible for RCB as they began the second innings with the spectacular shots. RCB fans were in full enthusiastic to cheer for their favorite team till the dismissal of King Kohli. All the cheering power converted into heated controversy.

It all started when the KKR pace bowler Harshit Rana came up to ball for his second over. Kohli was on the striker side. Rana  gave a full toss and to play the ball,Virat came out to the crease and he uncomfortably played and Rana caught it. The bowler appealed for out and the umpire raise his finger and Virat Kohli was given out.

Kohli was upset with the umpire's decision and he immediately goes for the review. The third umpire reviewed and told the field umpire to stay with the decision of OUT!

Just after the decision, it provoked everyone. Even Kohli and RCB captian Faf du Plesis, who were on the crease, were in great anger. While walking back to the pavilion, Virat argued with the umpire and went back frustrated. Though, it was a big wicket for KKR, it comes up with the hailstorm of questions. RCB lost the match by 1 run. Not acceptable. Might be the wrong decision of Virat's dismissal impacted the game.

Therefore, to clear the air, the Star sports took the X and explained the scenario.

They posted,"Virat was indeed out as per the official rule book. The rule states that for a delivery to be considered a no ball, the ball must be at waist height as it crosses the stepping crease.

In Kohli's situation, while the ball was at waist height when he encountered it, as it crossed the stepping crease, it was below waist height, making it a fair delivery basis the official rule."

Now understand the law of ICC, what its says about the Bowling of dangerous and unfair non-pitching deliveries. According to rule 41.7.1 of ICC regulations 'Bowling of dangerous and unfair non-pitching deliveries': Any delivery, which passes or would have passed, without pitching, above waist height of the striker standing upright at the popping crease, is to be deemed to be unfair, whether or not it is likely to inflict physical injury on the striker. If the bowler bowls such a delivery the umpire shall immediately call and signal No ball.

Hence, the decision was made out.

However, the fans and cricket fraternity unable to accept the decision and demanded to implement the rule book.

Do let us know in comments about your thought on the decision to implement the rule or not.
